Where you're landing

Your match is at Houston Stadium (NRG Stadium) in Houston. Pick your airport, tap to add it to your plan.

Heads up: Your tickets will say "Houston Stadium" — your GPS may still say "NRG Stadium." Same place, same address: 1 NRG Pkwy, Houston, TX 77054. FIFA renamed it for the tournament due to sponsorship rules.

IAH → Stadium Official

Normal day: 15–25 min Estimated
Match day: 35–60 min
Downtown → Stadium
~4–5 miles
METRORail Red Line: ~12 min Official
✓ Skip the traffic — take the rail
The IAH problem: George Bush Intercontinental is on the far north side of Houston. NRG Stadium is on the far south side — a true cross-city drive. On a normal day that's 35–50 min. On June 14 (Sunday, World Cup), plan for 90–120 min minimum. Clear your arrival day. Don't book a tight connection. Once you're in the city, the METRORail eliminates this problem entirely.

Our Recommendation

Fly into IAH (George Bush Intercontinental) for most international connections — Lufthansa and other European carriers fly direct. Hobby is closer to the stadium but serves fewer international routes.

Immigration lines will be long on match weeks. Give yourself 2+ hours after landing.

International Hub
IAH — George Bush Intercontinental Official
Houston's main international gateway — far north side of the city. Lufthansa, Condor, and other European carriers fly direct from FRA/MUC/DUS. More international options than Hobby. Rental car counters inside the terminal. Be aware: this airport is a full cross-city drive from NRG Stadium.

Closer to Stadium
Hobby Airport (HOU) Official
Only 8–11 miles from NRG Stadium — the closer airport by a significant margin. Mostly domestic via Southwest Airlines. Good option if you're connecting through a US hub (Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago). Faster security and a smaller footprint than IAH.

Know Before You Go
US Dollars (USD) Only
Euros are not accepted in Texas. Exchange currency before you fly or withdraw USD from ATMs at IAH. Cards accepted almost everywhere — Visa and Mastercard are universal.
USD only
Cards accepted widely
ATMs at IAH
Save on fees: Most foreign cards charge 3–5% on every purchase. Consider loading a Wise or Revolut card before you fly — they convert at the real exchange rate with minimal fees.
Dynamic currency conversion trap: If a card terminal asks "pay in USD or EUR?" — always choose USD. The EUR option uses a terrible exchange rate.
💡 Best ATMs at IAH: Chase and Bank of America machines tend to have the lowest fees for foreign cards.
Best Move: Do This Before You Fly
eSIM — No Physical Card Needed
Set up a US data plan before you land. Activate on the plane — you'll have maps, Uber, and WhatsApp the second you touch down. No airport queues, no hunting for a kiosk.
Recommended: Airalo or Nomad eSIM. Search "USA 30-day data." ~$15–35. Works on any unlocked iPhone or Android with eSIM support.
~$15–35 for 30 days
Instant activation
No kiosk needed
Prefer a physical SIM? AT&T or T-Mobile counters at IAH. ~$30–50. Expect queues on arrival days.

Match-Day King METRORail Access
Museum District / Medical Center
The strongest base for match-day logistics. The METRORail Red Line stops directly at NRG Park Station — your hotel is a few blocks from the rail, and the stadium is a direct 10-minute ride. No car needed on match day. This area is also safe, well-lit, and walkable with restaurants nearby.

Best for Groups Visitor-Friendly
Galleria / Uptown Houston
Upscale area with lots of hotel inventory — good if you're traveling with a group and want a consistent, safe, polished environment. The Galleria mall is massive. You'll need a car or Uber to reach the stadium, but prices here may be lower than closer-in options.

Budget + Walking Distance
NRG Park Area
A handful of hotels sit within walking distance of NRG Stadium itself. Not a neighborhood with much to do — mostly chain hotels near the Astrodome site. But if your only goal is to wake up and walk to the game, this is the one. Don't expect bars or restaurants nearby.

How to move

Houston Stadium has direct light rail — a major advantage. Your strategy depends on where you're staying.

Which strategy fits you?

Staying in Museum District, Midtown, or Downtown? METRORail Red Line — cheapest, fastest, no parking.
Multi-day trip across Houston? Rental car for flexibility, rail on match day.
One match only, hate driving? METRORail is the clear winner — confirmed enhanced frequency on match days, verify exact schedule at ridemetro.org.
Match-day pickup: Walk a few blocks from the stadium before calling Uber — staging at the gate means 2+ hr waits and triple surge.

Heat + humidity warning: Houston in June is hot and humid — average highs typically in the low-to-mid 90s°F (33–36°C), with heat index values that can push significantly higher when humidity is elevated. On bad humidity days, the combination is genuinely dangerous for people not acclimatized to it. Hydrate constantly, minimize outdoor exposure, and use A/C at every opportunity. The stadium itself has a retractable roof with full AC. NOAA climate data

METRORail Red Line → NRG Park Station Budget Hero Official

Houston is the only 2026 World Cup city in the South with direct light rail to the stadium. The METRORail Red Line stops directly at NRG Park Station — a straight shot from Downtown or Midtown with no transfers. METRO has confirmed enhanced service for World Cup match days; exact frequency (reported at approximately every 6 minutes) is not yet officially published and should be verified at ridemetro.org closer to June 2026. Cheapest option, avoids all parking and traffic. Verify ridemetro.org

Capacity warning: Trains will be standing-room-only for 2–3 hours before kickoff. Board earlier than you think you need to. Post-match will be the same — you may wait 20–30 min for a train you can actually board. Plan accordingly.
🅿 Pro Move — Fannin South Transit Center: Have a rental car but don't want to pay $100+ for stadium parking? Drive to Fannin South Transit Center — a massive Park & Ride facility just one METRORail stop from NRG Park. Free parking, cheap rail fare, no stadium traffic. This is the move. Local Rec

Rental Car Best for Multi-Day Trips

Best if you're exploring Houston across multiple days — the city is spread out and a car makes it practical. Pick up at IAH or Hobby. On match day, take the METRORail and leave the car at the hotel.

Most flexible for sightseeing Base ~$45–75/day All-in: ~$100–120/day with taxes + insurance ~ Estimate Parking: $50–150+ match day ~ Estimate
Hidden costs to know: Texas airport fees, taxes, and insurance push the daily rate well above the base. Under 25? Expect a ~$25/day young driver surcharge on top.
Driving license: Visitors can generally drive in Texas with a valid, unexpired foreign license. Some rental companies require an International Driving Permit (IDP) — if you have one, get the 1943 Convention version (grey cover).
3

Uber / Lyft

Normal Houston rides est. $15–30. Match-day surge to/from the stadium can hit $60–100+. Post-match is the worst — 2+ hour waits and prices triple. Hack: walk 5–10 min away from stadium exits before requesting a ride. Use METRORail instead whenever possible on match day.

No parking needed Works from anywhere in Houston Surge pricing on match days Long post-match waits at gate
4

EaDo Fan Fest → METRORail Connection

The Houston FIFA Fan Festival is at EaDo (East Downtown). From EaDo, you can connect to the METRORail Red Line to reach the stadium. If you're spending the pre-match at the fan fest and then heading to the game, this is the logical route — no car, no surge, low stress.

What you need to know

Houston in June is seriously hot and humid. Heat index values can reach dangerous levels. Nothing should catch you off guard.

🌡️
Heat + Humidity
Low–mid 90s°F
Average June highs in the low-to-mid 90s°F (33–36°C), but heat index values can spike significantly higher when humidity is elevated — triple digits on bad days is realistic. The stadium has a retractable roof with full AC. Outside without shade is a different environment entirely. NOAA climate data
💧
Hydration
Bring a bottle
Humidity accelerates dehydration faster than dry heat. Don't wait until you're thirsty. Refill stations at fan zones.
💰
Tipping
Usually 15–20%
Common at sit-down restaurants, bars, and rideshare. Factor it in — it adds up fast.
🔌
Power
120V · A/B
Bring a plug adapter. Check if your charger supports 100–240V before packing a voltage converter.
Stadium Entry — Clear Bag Policy (Critical)

FIFA and Houston Stadium enforce a strict clear bag policy. Show up with a regular backpack or large purse and you'll be turned away at the gate and sent to a paid locker. Don't be that person.

What's allowed:

✓ Clear plastic / vinyl / PVC bag — max 12″ × 6″ × 12″ ✓ Small clutch — max 4.5″ × 6.5″ ✓ One-gallon clear zip-lock bag ✗ Regular backpacks ✗ Large purses or tote bags ✗ Camera bags
UV Index 10–11 · Humidity makes it worse

Houston June is genuinely dangerous heat combined with subtropical humidity. Average highs run in the low-to-mid 90s°F, but when humidity spikes, heat index values can push well above 100°F — and sweat doesn't evaporate effectively, so your body's cooling system is impaired. Heat exhaustion is a real risk for visitors not acclimatized to this climate. SPF 50+, sunglasses, and a hat are the minimum — more importantly, stay in shade and A/C as much as possible when outdoors.

☀ SPF 50+ — reapply every 2 hrs 🕶 Polarized sunglasses 🧢 Hat for outdoor time 💧 Refillable bottle

Houston Reality
Houston Is Not a Walking City
Houston is massive and almost entirely car-dependent outside of Downtown, Midtown, and the METRORail corridor. What looks walkable on a map often isn't — distances are real and the heat makes them worse. Plan trips by neighborhood. Don't try to do EaDo, Galleria, and the stadium in one day on foot.
Budget Reality
Prices Don't Include Tax or Tip
Texas sales tax is up to 8.25%. Add a standard 18–20% tip and that $15 menu item becomes closer to $19–20 by the time the bill lands. Quick math: add ~$1 for every $10 on the price tag to estimate tax, then add your tip on top.
Culture Note
Expect Casual Small Talk
Texans are genuinely friendly — strangers will chat in lines, ask where you're from, or recommend food spots without being asked. One thing to know: if someone says "How are you?" while walking past, they're not waiting for an answer. It's just "hello." A quick "Good, thanks" keeps it moving. Perfectly normal.
